      quote Jerry Ahrens:

Is that a 7 1/2 Elgin or maybe a 5 hp? I have a couple of parts motors that are the 7 1/2 models, I may be able to help with the missing front control panel cover. I actually like those green Elgin’s. You wouldn’t believe how much power they have, even compared to an OMC.

Most folks think I reside over on the dark side, but yea, I am a fan of the Elgin motors also. I have two of them, both 1947’s (I think, hard to tell.) One is a 2.5 hp. single water cooled, and the other is a 3.5 hp. twin water cooled. These run great, and I have less than $30 in the pair. I think that these were very high quality simple motors that did what they were supposed to do. I often use one as an emergency motor when I am doing water testing and really don’t want to row back to the launch. Very small, light portable and dependable…..what’s not to like.

Good news on the Western Auto. A little work with my strap wrench and a pipe wrench and the fancy nut is off. I cleaned up the points but no spark. How would I go about checking the coil? It "looks" to be in good shape for what that is worth. Condensers available?
