I met up with RBM guru Chris Scratch this afternoon to look at a collection of outboards for sale. I resisted the temptation to buy anything and as we were leaving somehow I was either enabled or bamboozled into bringing home a 1928 Lockwood Chief and a 1928 ELTO Speedster. I’m not complaining. The price was right and I’ve wanted a Chief for a long time.

January 18, 2017 at 11:49 pm #51293You were not enabled or bamboozled. Many a time I have awoken from a road trip and found motors in the back of my truck…not remembering anything. At least that is what I tell my wife. Very nice motors….looks like the two of you had a good day.

January 19, 2017 at 12:59 am #51298You don’t need that stuff. Think of all the room they will take up. You just cleaned the garage too!
I loved the lines of the Chief, seeing the Chris Scratch collection is what made me want my own.
January 19, 2017 at 1:09 am #51300Looks like a nice purchase to me! I’ve always wanted a Chief myself, but haven’t ever ran on to one. I was fortunate enough to buy a great running Speedster from a great friend of mine before he passed. I plan on getting it back on the water this year.

I got to rickrodt’s post above and she says with a laugh… and I quote "You guys are all full of S–t!" 😆
Looks like a couple great buys to me. Congrats!!

January 19, 2017 at 3:21 am #51310the real guilty party here is anybody but me, hehehe.
Let’s start with Jack Craib, as he passed the sellers info to me in the first place.
I merely contacted the seller to verify that he had stuff to sell. The original list alleged that there was a Martin Hi-Speed 60 and an Elto Hi-Speed Speedster as part of the for-sale items. This morning, on a whim, I contacted Wayne to say I was headed down his way to look motors over. Wayne is the one who volunteered that he had the day off, I extended an invitation for him to join me in the motor inspection, purely as a courtesy, you understand, and I’ll accept blame for that, but he’s not completely innocent either! Well, its all good natured joking is all.
At any rate,we got there and went through the motors that lay scattered about.
The Martin turned out to be service Martin 60, nothing high-speed about it. It is all there, and rolls over nice and smooth, and the original starter handle is one of the nicest ones I’ve seen on a barn-fresh Martin, but she’s no racer.
The Hi-Speed Speedster turned out to be a service motor as well, and that’s the one Wayne has now.
The Lockwood is a 1928 model that has been modded for remote steering and throttle, but it can be put back to original very easily and without any special Merc tools required. It’s also got an unauthorized underwater exhaust pipe added to it, but that can be fixed also.
Other motors he had for sale (in various states of disrepair)
Johnson AA-37, Johnson K-50, Johnson TN-27, Triton single (air-cooled thing with Tecumseh powerhead, reminds me a lot of an 60’s Eska or Clinton) 1948-49 Evinrude Sportwin model 4423, 1946 Evinrude Sportwin 4368, Model 4335 Evinrude, 1914 Evinrude Detachable, 1950 Merc KG7, 1953 Mercury MK15, 1956 Mercury Mark25E, and a little Sea King Midget, and late Johnson PO-15.
None of them being close to running any time soon. Most had at least one thing either missing or broken. THe MK25E was missing all the electrical parts, and stuck hard. MK15 stuck tight. K-50 stuck tight. PO had the carb mounting flange broken off the crankcase casting.
I bought the 1914 Evinrude, the exhaust manifold and can are gone, the cylinder has a weld repair from being split open, and the tank is banged up bad on the starboard side. Oh well, there are always risks associated with going to look at a pile of old iron…… some (or all) of it may end up following you home, whether you want it to or not!
Best,

January 19, 2017 at 3:30 am #51314This is a Lockwood Chief at Tomahawk in 2004 as I recall. . . 🙂

January 19, 2017 at 11:49 am #51320I was fooling myself to think I could get out of there without buying anything. All joking aside, I thank Chris for sharing his find with me. It was a fun way to spend an afternoon and I got a couple good project motors out of the deal.

January 19, 2017 at 12:49 pm #51325I found an 82B a few years ago s/n 11998.
It has the underwater exhaust conversion on it.
Does yours have the "drip tray" under the carb intact, or is it broken off?
Mine is broken, and I wanted to see what a complete one looked like.
Thanks,
