      While most of the nickel plating on this tank was gone from the outside, most of it was still on the inside.

      A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

        To answer the plating question;

        The tank was plated by a process known as “Terne plating”. What is that, you ask? Well here’s one explanation;

        Terne plate is a form of tinplate: a thin steel sheet coated with an alloy of lead and tin. The terne alloy was in the ratio of 10-20% tin and the remainder lead. The low tin content made it cheaper than other tinplates.

        So its not nickel plating on the tank, its that stuff I just told you about.

        The cylinders, flywheel, flywheel nut, and fuel and water pipes were originally nickel plated. If its an aluminum part it was either left grainy (or as-cast) and bare aluminum (i.e. transom bracket) or got polished (leg, rudder, propeller). I’m of the belief that there were no painted parts on an original motor. For the simple reason that the Terne plating process is no longer done anywhere that I know of, as well as nickel plating being as expensive as it is, most folks prefer to paint these motors when they recondition and refinish them. Nothing wrong with that as the paint will preserve them as well as anything else.
