Just installed a Mercury branded Tiny Tach in my newly refurbished 64 28HP Evinrude so I would be able dial in the correct prop using the 4500 redline.
This got me thinking, ok I have a number to shoot for for top end, now what about idle? I don’t remember seeing numbers for idle settings in the Johnson red book, or any of the other technical info from OMC that I have ever seen. I know Mercury gives idle RPM settings in their service manuals.
I guess I can shoot for what I have done in the pass. Just get the motor to run as low as it can go, smoothly without stalling, but would like to know if there were factory recommendations?
      Thanks,

      Bob D

Old school on that one.  Slow as it will run without stalling.

That is a question that I have always wondered about too; but usually, OMC stuff will go so low that nobody bothers to care, I guess.

I have never seen a Mercury Branded Tiny Tach. Pretty cool! Is that something new or something you’ve had for awhile?

          Long live American manufacturing!

Hi Bill, yes it’s old, 5-6 years old? Picked it up on EBay.
Was holding it for a special project boat /motor project.
Bought it because I thought Mercury OEM was better than the cheap Tiny Tachs . It turned out just to be a rebranded Tiny Tach. Ha. Pretty sure that Mercury doesn’t put their name on them anymore.
            Take care,

            Bob D
