Hey everyone. I am replacing the coils and spark plug wires on my 1966 6hp Evinrude. I can order solid copper core wire and make my own wires, but I was wondering if I can take a spark plug wire from a car, cut one end off and shove it into the coil to hit the spike. will that work or is there an big enough difference from a solid core, to modern that will make it difficult or motor wont run right?

modern cars use carbon fiber cores..to prevent to much RF noise .

        not recommended for outboards

get yourself some good solid stranded wire core at a local motorbike shop, amazon or tractor supply store 4 feet should do… some places sell it a $1/foot

Carbon core wire has resistance. That resistance will reduce the available spark to the plug. With an outboard where you are generating your own voltage, you don’t want to introduce anything to reduce it. Same reason you should not use resistor-type spark plugs.

Carbon core wire would work just fine if you could attach it to the coil.

Listen to Cosbyman and Frank! Use plain old 7mm copper core wire. You can get it a lawn mower repair shop , tractor repair shop or even an auto supply shop.

                Cheers,

Carbon core (resistor) spark plug wires are OK for vehicles because their ignition systems put out thousands of more volts than any points style magneto can. Outboard mags need all the help they can get to fire the plugs so no carbon core wires or resistor plugs.
