Hey Friends, I am restoring a 1941 Neptune Muncie, 1.5hp. The points look decent and I cleaned them, best I could, I haven’t gotten to putting the magneto plate back together yet, but I was wondering are there points that are more available that would also work or swappable? Thank you!
February 7, 2021 at 9:56 pm #229849Perhaps other outboards with the same magnetos used the same point sets?
Get the magneto make and model number and do some research.
That might be easier than retrofitting a set of points and getting
them to work right.Prepare to be boarded!

February 8, 2021 at 12:20 am #229870Arrrrr!!! We agree with The Buccaneer. Many of the magnetos used by Neptune were made by Eisemann. Visit oldcroak.com for Eisemann flywheel magneto information if this is what you have. There should be a make and model number on the backing plate. Eisemann went away sometime in the late 1940-1950’s. If there is contact material left on the points by all means polish and reuse them. Files are much too coarse. Use a fine sharpening stone or Cratex stick and get them smooth. They will stay clean longer Sourcing new ones will be dodgy. Retrofitting will be a challenge as it may affect edge gap (timing of the opening of the points vis a vis the position of the rotating magnet to get the biggest bang). A far bigger problem with these old eggbeaters may be the condenser. Have someone test it for electrical leakage with an actual automotive condenser tester designed to do so. Use almost any automotive condenser. Hope this helps!

February 8, 2021 at 9:41 am #229898Brownfrog, Oldcroak is a good site. I’m sure I have it bookmarked, but haven’t been there
in a long time. Thanks!
Here’s one mention of the Eisemann magneto for Neptunes……..

February 11, 2021 at 10:25 pm #230271Unless the breaker point assembly is physically broken there should be no need to replace the contact set. The actual contact points can be cleaned and polished and will serve well. If serious re-surfacing is required because of bad pitting (an unusual condition on our outboards) I recommend use of a fine diamond hone. Do not use the old school “points file” , way to course.

February 12, 2021 at 12:05 am #230276Would anyone have a PICTURE of how the points and breaker assembly should look like for a Neptune?
February 12, 2021 at 1:46 am #230279We probably have the information you need as many of the Neptune mags were made by Eisemann. We need to know the make and model number. It will be on the backing plate. Contact us at brownfrog@comcast.net

February 12, 2021 at 11:13 am #230291I share Joe B’s opinion on this. If you decide to discard the set you remove, I would be happy to take them off your hands.
Respectfully,
