Mumbles, is that yours?
July 7, 2016 at 12:45 am #39755Wow, VinTin. That hood has seen some serious use over the years. Mine was not quite that bad; however, our local boat builder (his father built our boat) decided to paint the hood out of the kindness of his heart using fiberglass boat paint (All Grip?) and filled in the phillips head screws on top with paint to a point where you could not see they were screws. That was some tough paint! It took Strip-Eze an hour to penetrate it so I could scrape it off and try to paint it again. I eventually got it stripped, bead blasted, and painted again. Re-chromed the metallic parts and installed NOS medallions that I had found at Better Way Marine in California in the early 1990’s. By the way, if you decide to restore your 1958 hood, I have a good "Starflite" applique to replace the one that is missing on yours.
Mumbles, you are getting warmer. That is the replacement letter "E" that I glued on my Lark.

I found it in some obscure site after searching for a half hour!

Thanks so much for the offer. If I do, I’ll take you up on it. I don’t think my 58 50hp had as much use as it had decades of sitting out in the weather.

The weather can do a lot of damage to an old outboard. Our Starflite has been hanging on the back of our mahogany fishing boat and has always been stored inside out of the sunshine (ultraviolet light) and other seasonal storms and weathering. Still, it took a lot of effort to restore the old girl. Sometimes plastic just gives up with age . . . . . . . as does glue.
