Hi! I’m currently restoring an Evinrude Elto Light Twin Model

      • Model Year: 1923
      • HP: 3
      • Model #: Type A
      • Serial #: 8523

and was wondering where I could find a service manual on this. This is my first time ever restoring a vintage outboard and I am trying to differentiate the metals. I know the rudder and other pieces are aluminum and the tank etc are steel. But I noticed my flywheel seems to rust at a greater rate and didn’t know if it is because it’s a different metal or I need to recoat it. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! I requested to join the “the world needs more elto’s” facebook group but am waiting to be approved because i saw that it has some info on there as well and hope to get approved soon. Also if there are any other good resources or youtube videos you know of on tips and tricks for restoration pls let me know. Thanks again. 🙂

Use John Deere corn head grease or
            Lubriplate 105 for gear lube

wow thank you everyone for all of your help! I came off with simply hitting the middle part of the flywheel and popped right off! I also got the manual THanks buccaneer!

I have a follow up question, and this is my first time ever doing anything like this 🙂 so I apologize if this is a dumb question! I’m having a bit of a hard time getting the grime/crud/rust off of all the parts safely especially the aluminum parts since I don’t want to ruin the aluminum and was wondering if you all had any good suggestions. Also if you have a favorite aluminum polish recommendations thank you!!

I suspect what your experiencing on the aluminum is
corrosion. Similar to rust. When it’s aloud to continue
over a long period of time it gets deep into the metal.
Aluminum brighteners only work on the surface and
as they are an acid can turn the aluminum black if
left on too long. Try some 0000 steel wool dry. Tear
off a few pieces switching to a fresh one from time to
time and keep scrubbing till there is no more
improvement. See what you think. The aluminum will
still be pitted and it’s will still show. If you can live with
that give it a polishing with an aluminum  polish to
protect what you have done. Do a small part at first till
you get a feel for it. The only way to eliminate it is to
sand past it and the impurities in the early cast aluminum
make that pointless. Most people don’t feel its worth
the effort and if you find out you feel the same it just
                        means your normal.
