What’s a good solvent to use in the basement for cleaning cowl before stripping paint? Something with very little fumes. Thanks for any help!

Something water based or intended to be used with water. Everything that remove grease will also be hard on flesh…use rubber gloves and eye protection. Rinse, rinse and rinse some more
after cleaning. Some harsh detergents will remove loose paint too!
I use Super Clean which is one of the harsher detergents.

What method are you using to remove the paint ?

If you are using sandpaper or abrasives or sandblast I would just clean with soap and water, maybe tsp and water and a small wire brush if there is lots of caked on grease.

If you are using paint stripper there is no need to degrease.

Citra Solve is an excellent water based degreaser and is available thru janitorial supply stores. My supplier also carries many other brands of commercial degreasers and products you can’t buy anywhere else.

A plastic tub of Purple Power worked pretty well for me.

I’ll try Citristrip. Not sure how well it works on grease covered metal.

Just a heads up.. That citristrip is useless on the old paints of the 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s. save your money.

For indoors I use a plastic container, the ones that kitty litter comes in, with a mixture of simple green and water. Have had great results. I have used it as a soak tank then just use a cleaning brush and water to clean it off.
