Trying to install the inlet silencer on a 1956 Johnson 30 HP RJE-18. Loosened the screws holding the front half of the motor pan and that allows the pan to come forward slightly and move downward a bit. Have not removed that part of the pan completely because the fuel and air hoses pass thru holes in the pan. I still can not put the silencer in place on the carb because of interference with the plate. I could disassemble further but if that is required it would make removing the carb for service a real pain. Should I try splitting the silencer in half or does this account for many of these motors being missing the inlet silencer?
Is there an easy way to install /remove the silencer? Am I missing something here?
December 16, 2017 at 3:09 pm #68669I hate to tell you this, but you will have to remove the forward section of the pan to install the air silencer. Just unhook the rubber hoses from the carb and the intake manifold and the fuel coupling from the steering handle and pull it forward.
December 16, 2017 at 3:42 pm #68670Not to get into a disagreement, but I think if you remove the carb adjustment needles, you can remove that silencer…. If we are referring to the same thing…. That is how I do it, also how it can be installed, just do not put the carb needles in, install silencer then install and preset the needles…

December 16, 2017 at 5:26 pm #68674And now for my take on it. I’d probably have the silencer off because of doing carburetor work–right? So, the way I do it is remove the flywheel and electric starter and the bracket (or generator if equipped) from the other side, then the carburetor and silencer as one chunk.
Easy. And in most cases the flywheel would be coming off for ignition work anyway.December 17, 2017 at 1:19 am #68691Thank you everyone. I will print/save the thread for reference. This time I was able to get the silencer on without disturbing the needle packings. I loosened the front half of the pan by removing the two small screws at the edge of the pan at the joint and the screw under the inlet manifold through the front pan. Also removed the rubber seal from the front half of the pan and loosened up the bolts on the two vertical brackets (one supports the starter). Then there was enough slack in the rubber hoses that I could move the front pan forward and angle it to starboard enough to slide the silencer into place. Been thinking about how to do this for awhile and really appreciate the assistance.
Thanks again,
