      see pict.

this the rewind spring on a non working rewinder Merc 3.9 mid 60’S

is the spring actually broken or did it just unhook itselft from the retainer plate’s tab next to it ??

should it look different ? if not i’ll just retension it as per instructions with that tab on the retainer plate and call it a day 🙂

      thanks

That is typical of a spring where the rope was yanked to the end and broke off. Then the pulley & spring recoils violently, resulting in a backlash of the spring like a fishing reel.

ok I will check the other end to make certain it is not free running around the outer diameter . it should be hooked into a slot .. presumably.

            thanks for the feedback

I agree with Dave. That’s what the end of the Mercury spring normally looks like. It’s made that way to engage easily as it is wound up.and pre-loaded. We can’t really see whether the outer end is okay or not.

When Mercury recoils don’t work, it is usually because there is a problem with how it was assembled, worn bushings, worn wave washers or a broken tab washer. Or all of the above. Or just the need for some lube. I like a few drops of 90 weight gear oil.

              Long live American manufacturing!

in theory….. if the open end is not secured the whole spring should rotate inside the cavity . that is what i’ll try to do check as I do not want to remove that snake out .

thanks all for the comments . i’ll report back asap

Update: Glad to report all is good….

Spring has been retensionned … it was not broken. Utube pitched in with a good video on how to reinstall all the parts properly (cup, washer wave washer etc…) .

                  Recoil is very smooth now

                  thanks for helpfull hints
