I have meant to ask this for quite some time . When i got this motor i replaced the water pump. I found a thin piece of stainless "foil" About 2 .5 X 5" not exactly square and a small #10 Nut in the lower unit pocket behind and below the water pump .This mid section and lower unit had been worked on by a shop previous to me aquiring the motor. I think it was "Debris" that got in there when they were replacing or serviced the midsection and lower unit .
My question is , can the piece of stainless foil be part of this motors exhaust gasket that has disintegrated and ended up in that part of the lower unit? The #10(or so)nut looks like the size off the smaller starter solenoid terminals. I don’t see any other location with anything like this stainless foil.. As i recall it had a couple round holes punched in it ,and was only part of a larger complete piece. Wish i still had it to post a photo.
Any ideas? Thanks, Jim PSB (EDIT spellcheck)"Some people want to know how a watch works, others just want to know what time it is"
Robbie RobertsonJanuary 6, 2017 at 6:21 pm #50467Well, anything is possible…But, are you saying that the debris was under the SS steel impeller plate? If so, seems very doubtful it came from inside the engine anywhere. The debris would have had to come down the water tube and backwards through the water pump in order to end up under the SS plate. With this in mind, I’m thinking it is debris left behind during previous repairs…

It is about 6" deep space at the rear of the lower unit, with a drain hole. I’m thinking the junk that fell in there during the repairs previous to me getting the motor happened when they replaced the midsection with a used one. The water pump area is nice and clean, nice fresh water motor for once. Thanks, PSB

January 7, 2017 at 1:18 am #50504Wedgie, it was not foam,it it was thin stainless ,maybe .010-.020" and flexible .All i could think of was the metal lamination layer of an exhaust cover gasket. any one have a photo of a OMC 25 exhaust cover gasket next to a ruler?
Guess the easiest thing to do is pull my exhaust cover and see if the gaskets are intact>i dread doing that and risk breaking bolts, There are around 8 bolts holding the cover on Thanks, PSB"Some people want to know how a watch works, others just want to know what time it is"
Robbie RobertsonJanuary 7, 2017 at 1:40 am #50506This is a 1981 Johnson J25RCIM. Could this stainless be the inner exhaust cover PN#0324322? How thick are they?

Robbie RobertsonJanuary 7, 2017 at 1:50 pm #50538can you post a photo of the object in question ??
January 7, 2017 at 2:46 pm #50542324322 is about the only thing that could possibly fit the description. But as near as I can measure it without taking a motor apart, it is somewhere around .040-.050", hardly a "foil". And how in blazes could a chunk that big break out of it anyway? And if it did, there would be a super huge water leak into the powerhead. The only other thing I can imagine would be a chunk out of the inner exhaust tube. But that isn’t stainless or that thin. Whatever it is, it has to have come from beyond the exhaust ports. Anything from ahead of there would have to pass through the ports. And no, there are no gaskets like that anywhere.
January 7, 2017 at 5:55 pm #50554This piece must have been stuck inside the used midsection that was replaced. the motor runs well now so i’m not going to be concerned . Thanks ,Jim PSB

Robbie RobertsonJanuary 7, 2017 at 7:52 pm #50559I think your first instinct was right on. Maybe the last guy to work on this just decided to leave some trash in a dead space to start a conversation like this ?
