Hi,  I am done painting my Johnson 5.5 HP  CD12.  I am trying to put back the black handle and am about 1/4 short of where I can put it on and screw it in.  It seems like the handle should extend about 1/4 past the black line rim to line up but I cant push it any further.  Is there a trick to this ?  Thanks for any help

Do you have the D-shaped notch in the grip (handle) properly aligned and engaged with the D-shape end of the shaft?  Also be sure the tabs on the friction block are aligned and sliding into the notches on the end of the tiller handle.

Good advice from Bobw. Also, make sure the friction block isn’t installed backwards. I have good results by lining up the flat part of the friction block, the flat side of the tiller shaft, and the tiller grip screw hole at 12:00. Push the tiller grip on with slight pressure. You may need to turn the grip slightly one way or another for the tab and slot to seat. Once seated, hold the pressure on the grip, and install the screw. It’s a little tricky at first but will be easy after doing it a few times.

Sometimes the friction block gets stuck in the handle.  Make sure you get it out and clean it.  The old grease and gunk causes the handle to turn hard.  The spring pushes on the friction block in the handle.  There are a couple ears on the friction block that need to line up with the slots on the tiller handle.   Usually that is the problem getting the last quarter inch, so you can get the bolt in.

            hope this helps

Thanks everybody,  IT WORKED,  and thanks so much for the input, would never have got it on my own.    4 hours on getting the handle back on, good learning experience, and again, everyones advice helped me to get it, had no idea I could get that piece out within the back of the black plastic handle , clean, align, etc.

Sometimes, having an assistant can make this assembly process easier as well.  Kind of tough getting everything lined up, and the screw located and started (without crosss threading it) with just two hands.
