I have my lower unit torn down. I do not see a spring that Tom mentioned. Is it supposed to be inside the cone or forward of it? If I knew approx. size I will go find one. Thanks for any help, ron

Are these parts manuals and shop manuals any use to you?

The weak spot on that style Johnson lower unit on the A-35 & up, and K-50 & up models is not the spring. It is the large brass cup that screws onto the prop shaft gear, pulling the gear onto the cone, compressing the heavy spring that is located inside the brass cup. The problem is when the brass cup cracks. That causes its flat face to bulge outwards slightly from the spring pushing there. This bulging pushes the prop shaft cone & gear to the rear, which removes the backlash required for the gears, which makes them jam together. Then they can’t rotate properly.
