      Hi All!

I’m working on this Johnson A-45. I took the cylinder head off to make for easier cleaning of the cylinder head itself, and parts of the motor below it. At first I thought it had no head gasket, and I thought that to be strange. However, when I looked closer, it appears a gasket was made out of old newspaper?!?

      What actually should be used?

I have no manual or parts diagrams. It would help if someone has one they could share.

      Thanks!

      Steve.

The A-45 doesn’t have a cylinder head gasket. I think what you are refering to is the cylinder base gasket. They were made from a brown craft paper that was impregnated with shellac. You can make an exact replacement using a brown paper grocery bag and painting each side with shellac. Then trace the outline using the cyl base and your old gasket. Cut and install!
