I’m about to service the lower unit of my Johnson A-45. Since I’ve never worked on one of these before, are there any pitfalls I should be aware of? Any tips or tricks to getting 50 year old grease out and fresh stuff in? Also, how do you verify there are no blockages in the water passages and verify cooling is taking place.
If you are a member of the club I would consult with the group leader for Johnson A series who I believe is Bob Zipps. You may also want to look at Skip Haggermans archive link on the sites home page. Take a look at past articles on the A series and you will get a lot of information. The grease used on early Johnson A series was very dense. I believe it was called Iron Sides. What I have done in the past is used a heat gun after taking the LU apart and heating it gradually and what did not pour out was easily wiped up with a towel. Replacement grease I used on the A’s was John Deere Corn Head Grease available at JD dealers or online. Lubriplate 105 could also work for the LU. Lots of detailed service info on the site for cooling as well.
Hope this helps. If you are not a member then I would suggest signing up.It is well worth the admission!! Plenty of good folks with great knowledge and willingness to help.
