I stumbled upon this little motor the other day. I believe it was a long shaft originally but somewhere along its life it has been converted to a short shaft.
It hasn’t run for a great many years but apart from that it seems well cared for. Compression (bone dry) is 79.6 (T) and 79.4 (B). I’m hoping the numbers to come up a bit once it is running again. It still has a strong spark although the coils are badly cracked. Both coils still seem original. Other than that it seems complete and just in need of a general service (ignition, impeller, seals and carb).I’ve torn it apart for painting but I cannot get the shaft in the lower unit to come out (the shock absorber?). Is it just a matter of pulling the gear off, or is this gear fixed to the shaft somehow?
August 23, 2023 at 11:45 am #279611The pinion gear is a snug fit on the shaft so the shaft must be driven out of the pinion using a large punch. If all goes well, the small Woodruff key will stay in the shaft.

August 24, 2023 at 5:18 pm #279682nice coils… should be a nice runner when all fixed up.
on my last 5.5 shock absorber I had a heck of a time resealing the GC and getting the drive shaft to turn … the shock absorber was stretched and I simply knocked it back to 6 inch 11/16
then I had it spot welded shut and installed a brass dive pin.
been reading lots of old posts on shock absorber size…. 6″11/16 seems the magic number … mine meaures 6″ 13/16 .
while initially working the housing I recall it falling out on the ciment floor and wonder if it got messed up then ??? anyhow… pursuing the adventure
GC gears turn fine on their own but driveshaft turns about 3/4 turn and binds… on its own . I’ll reinspect the shock absorber and if 6″11/16 is the magic number I’ll have my neighbour tack weld it at 6″11/16.

Blasted it today and got the primer on.
Tomorrow it’s time for spraying color.🙂I’m hoping it’ll be a good runner. It seems well cared for, no broken bolts this time
