I have a command center controller on a 1975 135 Johnson motor. I’m having issues with the neutral switch. When I turn the key to start I have a very narrow spot where the starter will engage. I have to move the throttle handle around in the neutral detent to get it to catch. If it is not in just the perfect little spot…nothing. I spent about an hour adjusting the cable and warm up position last night using the factory manual. That is working well but I do not see any adjustment procedures addressing the narrow start position problem. Is there a procedure for adjusting this issue?

      Thanks guys,

      Jeff

I don’t believe that switch position is adjustable and yes that situation is irritating! You can try putting a small piece of heat shrink tubing over the switch roller. Clean the roller well so the shrink tubing will adhere. After you shrink it the roller it will be a little larger diameter making the switch position less sensitive. I have had it work before. That was the only fix we had for it back in the day.

Just in case this might be an issue:
Some of those 70s V4s also had another safety switch which was found near the lower bypass cover on the starboard side of the engine. This safety switch prevented you from cranking the engine on too high of a throttle setting. I’m not sure if your engine has this safety switch, but it is easy enough to spot if it’s there. Sure sounds like the neutral safety switch is to blame here, but anything is possible.
If by chance your engine is equipped with this extra safety switch, simply ground its connection lead to rule it out as a possible cause….

            Thanks guys,
I’ll give them both a try.
