Working on the first winter engine project of the new year and finishing up the top end of a Johnson DT38. According to the service manual I have (4th edition) the brush arms coming off the coil need to be aligned to run on the inner hub of the flywheel and tool SE262 was used for that purpose. Looked to me like a block of aluminum that fit over the tapered flywheel spindle and the thin metal brush arms were supposed to touch the outer edges of the block to align them. I’m figuring the SE262 alignment block tool is scarce nowadays so pretty much I have to measure the outside diameter of the inner flywheel hub and bend the brushes to that measurement and test fit. Has anyone dealt with the brushes on the Johnson dt or ls,lt engines? They all seem to have the same coil/brush setup and I have a DT10,Ls37,and Ls38 to tackle after this project. Also looking for a transom bracket for the DT38 as one side of mine is broken and missing.

I’ve done an LS 38, LT 10 and LT 38 before. As a single cylinder there was no mystery to the LS. It was straight forward points and coil firing a single cylinder. The LTs I adjusted the brushes by hand/eye and got a good alternating spark on my second try.
Sorry that wasn’t more help 🙂

I measured the surface they ride on on my calipers and it was 1.810 so I figure if I get the brushes as close as possible to that I should be ok. Have to clean some surface rust off the flywheel magnets and then attempt to get the flywheel back on without bending the brushes back out of whack. Wouldn’t mind having one of those adjustment blocks if they were still out there to be had. Thanks
