On the 10 thru 35 or 40 HP 50’s 60’s Johnson Evinrude models, they use the petal reeds on the intake. I found they make them out of brass or a spring steel. I found this because I had an 18 Hp that I could not get to idle properly. I had 1 of each type reed on the plate. Apparently , They flex at different rates. I was either lean or rich. Once I put 2 of the same metal reeds in, It had a perfect idle. My question is , is there any advantage with brass over spring steel reeds or visa versa?
If that’s true, that is an amazing observation. Since I bring parts motors back from the dead all the time, I will be aware of that. When you got the motor, were the reeds already mismatched or was that something that you had tried yourself? I wonder if the steel one was out of a 25, which uses a whole slew of subtlety different parts than a regular old 18.
The motor was that way when I got it. It was driving me crazy, Just could not get it to idle smooth. I don’t know what possessed me to pull the intake plate off, but once I saw the different color reeds, I was on to something.
