On the 10 thru 35 or 40 HP 50’s 60’s Johnson Evinrude models, they use the petal reeds on the intake. I found they make them out of brass or a spring steel. I found this because I had an 18 Hp that I could not get to idle properly. I had 1 of each type reed on the plate. Apparently , They flex at different rates. I was either lean or rich. Once I put 2 of the same metal reeds in, It had a perfect idle. My question is , is there any advantage with brass over spring steel reeds or visa versa?

November 12, 2020 at 5:31 am #220652If that’s true, that is an amazing observation. Since I bring parts motors back from the dead all the time, I will be aware of that. When you got the motor, were the reeds already mismatched or was that something that you had tried yourself? I wonder if the steel one was out of a 25, which uses a whole slew of subtlety different parts than a regular old 18.
Long live American manufacturing!
November 12, 2020 at 8:08 am #220659The motor was that way when I got it. It was driving me crazy, Just could not get it to idle smooth. I don’t know what possessed me to pull the intake plate off, but once I saw the different color reeds, I was on to something.

I’m 77 years of age; ‘ been working (involved) with 2 cycle outboard motors for 6 decades. I’ve yet to see or feel any reeds made of brass.
Conclusion – Brass reeds are as rare as Hen’s Molars ?!
November 14, 2020 at 7:44 am #220821Not sure what they are. They look like brass in color but apparently not. What are they made of?
November 14, 2020 at 9:42 am #220828A magnet will rule out brass in a hurry.
Prepare to be boarded!
November 14, 2020 at 10:41 am #220830The brassy looking reeds are made out of beryllium copper.
