I started working on a HD-25 that I just got today. I would like to replace the cork float with a Sierra 18-7208 float I noticed that the float that is in the motor now has a bit of hardware attached. There is a clip and a brass screw on the top and I would think a clip on the bottom[ I haven’t removed it from the bowl as of yet.] I was wondering about the hardware swamping the float. Does anyone have experience with these ? My gut is telling me it should be OK, but a second, would boost my confidence . Thanks

Note that in the Gale motors you have to trim a bit off the top of the float which reduces the buoyancy. Trim off too much and it sinks. If I remember correctly, I didn’t have to trim the one that went in my Johnson. .Moral is, keep it as tall as you can.
November 17, 2020 at 7:16 pm #221089The tillotson carburetor on the small Neptune motors used the screw and clip that you mention. Take a trip to your local hardware store and pick up some 1/8 inch hairpin clips. The clips will slide on the needle and rest in the groove that the clip was in. They fit pretty snug on the pin. I do not use the screw. I hated to put a hole in the float.
The clips cost 30 cents each, I picked up some yesterday.November 17, 2020 at 11:23 pm #221104Why not just make and seal a new cork float for your HD25? pochefamily.org/outboard.
November 18, 2020 at 6:56 am #221121If you search out the posts here on AOMCI you will find a bunch of discussions on sealing cork floats. [some I posted myself] Some say it can be done easily, some say “not so easy” , some say you do not need to , some blame ethonol gas. Anyway, with the 18-7208 float modified to fit there is no question on sealing it. I have also used them in Evinrude Sportsman outboards and am very pleased, this motor with the brass screw in the float had me wondering, but I think raplacing the screw, with the hairpin type clip is a good idea. Thanks Again
