I’m working on this ’38 Johnson LS-38. I noted 2 cracks in the iron ring on the inside of the flywheel. See pics. I do have spark that jumps a 1/4-inch open air gap.  The ‘other’ end of cracked piece is attached to the flywheel at the magnet, so there are no ‘free’ pieces that will come off. What can/should I do about this? It is not going to be a daily runner, but I’d like to be able to use it occasionally. NABMD

Can the crack be ground out and welded without ruining the magnet?

        Prepare to be boarded!

For piece of mind, I would buy a parts motor with a good flywheel, or look for a flywheel which should be cheaper, easier, & safer than welding it.

A flywheel from an LS or DS motor will be a direct replacement.

Sources for parts would be Doug & Matt Penn

You could also place a want ad here in the

              .

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

I did place an ad in the classified; and I have the Penn’s business card in my rolodex. Thanks!
