Hey all, I have a Johnson outboard (S/N A-4883) that I inherited from my Dad. He was given it by a customer in his auto parts store. I know literally nothing about outboards (I’m more of a car guy). It appears to be missing a few parts (notably, the…air filter? that is a barrel shaped thing under the fuel tank, the propeller, and some form of exhaust). Is there a source for parts, or am I going to be stuck with ebay and boat classifieds? I’d love anything you guys could help with. Thanks!
Matt.

May 6, 2021 at 7:03 pm #237868The serial number makes your outboard a fairly early 1923 model. The “barrel shaped thing under the gas tank”is the muffler can.It and the two exhaust manifolds on each end make up the exhaustThere is no air filter, only a carb with an L shaped air horn (often missing). The propeller for the early A models are different from the later models.Jon Koranda is the group leader for the A model Johnsons and he may be to help with parts.

As for the muffler can – is this something I’d be able to replicate myself (I have a lathe and some bar and tube stock that would likely be a similar diameter), or is it really something that needs to be sourced from the factory?
If that’s the case with the intake, it has the L shaped air horn. Kinda dented up, but it’s there.
I will try to hunt down John Koranda to see about a propeller, among other missing parts.
May 8, 2021 at 8:01 am #237971The muffler is a two piece affair. The inner piece is 2” copper pipe with a line of holes drilled in it.The outer “wrap” is thin brass sheet lapped and riveted to form tube. Both are easily made with hand tools.Jon Korandas contact info is in members directory.
