Spike,
I put my money on PM T2
I have seen all the info about these models here before
but I think that he like to give the Spec Int Gr Leader the honor.June 26, 2018 at 8:40 pm #78496There are 2 issues here:
1. should the sig. leader be digitally enabled?
2. how best to acquire antique outboard info info.
The answer to the first is it would be nice but it’s not a job prerequisite. Instant
gratification is nice but I’d bet you’d remember the answer longer if your answer came via snail mail.Knowledge acquisition is best done from your own book shelf or filing cabinet or from your motor rack.
Buy reference material and lots of it.
As usual what Jerry Ahrens says is worth listening to.
I’ve known Bob Zipps for as long as I’ve been a club member and I can say without reservation
that he is one of the most helpful guys around. He’s also done more for the club than most of us
will ever do. His address is in the membership directory.Jack Craib

please visit my web sites at http://www.jackcraib.com or http://www.cailleoutboards.comJune 26, 2018 at 8:54 pm #78498Spike’s name is in blue.
That would seem to indicate that he
is not a member of AMOCI or he has
not made a request for full access
to all of the blue boards and the green
board. He can’t go to the most of the
places that have been suggested.A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
June 26, 2018 at 8:59 pm #78499To (try to) answer the original question……. which I believe was restricted to the transom screws and handles, and not to be confoozed with the tiller handle….for clarification purposes, I’ll refer to the transom screw handle thingys as "wing-nuts"
FWIW all my pre-1925 Johnson Light Twins have brass thumbscrews with brass wingnuts on them. Lowest number I have is #765. My highest number 1924 model "A" motor is #16402
My 1925 AB-25 has brass screws, but aluminum wingnuts.
The 1926 A-25 and 1926 P-30 have aluminum screws and aluminum wingnuts.
Given all that, we may be able to at least suggest that the 1922-24 model "A" motors had brass screws & wingnuts, and motors beyond that were given aluminum parts instead.
Sorry, can’t explain your #77XX with aluminum thumbscrews. It might be a replacement transom bracket, or replacement screws/wingnuts. or replacement something.
Regarding getting info out of SIG Leaders – you could always try to get it from them and, if successful, share it here. Otherwise, I’m with Jack, and try to encourage people to find out as much as they can by doing their own research.
Hope this helps.
Best,
PM T2He's livin' in his own private Idaho..... I hope to go out quietly in my sleep, like my grand-dad did..... and not screaming, like the passengers in his car...
June 26, 2018 at 9:05 pm #78501I have to admit in this day I never thought of a letter to Bob? My question/comments had more to do with when I worked with Bob at Johnson/OMC. I did want to ask a historical question about a picture that I figured he might know the answer. I didn’t mean anything critical, just the fact that he can’t be reached in what we take for granted today as normal means. Everything else has been conjecture on others people’s part.

Mumbles reply with a quote from the green board was a little surprising when I posted the question here, but never the less a great response from Bobby (Mr. Zipps) I am currently not a member of the AOMCI, but first joined the club in 1990 and am very familiar with the great articles and information that Bob made available in the Outboarder for many years. When all said and done I feel my question has been answered 😀
Thanks for all the response!June 27, 2018 at 1:24 pm #78540Anonymous
The expert on Johnson A motors is Bob Zipp. I have called he many times with problems and for info. on the A motors. He always answered the phone and with his vast knowledge of A motors he was able to answer all of my questions. His knowledge is not limited to the A motors but covers other motors like the TR40 and newer race motors.
