I have a pair of Johnson A’s I’m working on. One is 1922 and the other 1924. The earlier one has screws holding the steering bar to the cylinder heads.
The 1924 is missing the bar. Later motors (e.g. A-35) would have studs in the cylinder for the bar to set on and then secured with nuts.
I pulled these out of a junk jug thinking I’d use them like the later model but now I’m wondering what was “right?” Did they use screws originally, like my earlier motor? That’s why there are no studs in the 1924? When did they switch over?
More silly detail questions to follow. : )

I looked through my picture files and the screws
seem to be corrects for the A & A-25. Studs appear
on the A-35 going by the pictures I’ve saved.
There are a few exceptions but parts do get moved
around over the years.

After posting I looked at the motors I have had.
This A 25 looks to be original and it has studs.

December 19, 2023 at 7:26 am #283340Johnson changed from screws to attach steering rails to studs and nuts beginning in early 1925. An early 1925 A-25 would have had screws but a later 1925 or 1926 A-25 would have had studs and nuts, however there would have been some overlap.Your 1924 A would have definitely had screws.

The serial number of the motor I posted a picture of
was in the 42.000’s making it a 1926, inline with
Stanley’s verification.

My 1922 has a nice leather grip
I picked up another leather grip at a swap meet. It has a wooden piece inside of it. I pulled the grip off the 1922. No wooden piece.
