The 1922 leather grip fits snugly on the tiller tube.  Would there have been a similar wooden pice inside the grip on the 1922, or is that for a later application?  Any thoughts on reproducing the aluminum ring that seems to snug the grip onto the tube, or just leave well enough alone?

The early Johnson A motors are my favorites. You are lucky you have two nice grips, they are usually dadly damaged or missing entirely. You can use a piece of thin aluminum tubing to make a reasonable facsimile of the ferrules. The wooden plug was never used with the leather grip but was used with the black rubber “coke bottle” grips on some later models.
