Ok, I’ll keep it simple and fit the military surplus one first and see how it runs. I’ll keep the omc coils for my K50

What condenser should I use for the new military surplus coil? The same .4 uF that a P35 requires??

      Thanks

There was a recent discussion, where someone posted the capacitor that matched that coil.I tried to find it ,but unfortunately the search function on this site is completely worthless.Hopefully the member who posted the info will see your ? soon and respond.

I saved the follow after I was wondering the same…….

Regarding the Military specs 97403-13206E0140 coil I used on the Lockwood….

When I first researched the 4A032 military coil I found a parts catalogue, which showed the capacitor as .25 mfd. I use OMC universal condensers (.22mfd) with no issues. The OMC condenser is just on the edge of the normal range so I don’t see any long term issues especially considering the amount of use the motors get.(Wayne Beaton)

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

Those work in the K mags too. Hers a set I put in a K80, same basic mag as the K-50. Condenser values are the same as the universal coils so if the old ones are good they will work. If not, just squeeze new ones in.

I just wrote a technical article on a coil modification for the P series engines, 35,40,45 that will appear in the July issue of the Antique Outboarder. I used a stock Johnson PO series coil and it is a relatively easy mod.

If you wish, you can e-mail me or phone me. My contact info is in the directory.

The beauty of the PO coil is it has the separated laminations like the P coil but there is a little bit of mod needed. It is much easier than the above mods.

                Good luck!

                    Thanks George.
I have plenty of PO coils. The new OMC ones will work great on my K50, and the military coil will do for the K35.

                      Hi,
Got some military coils. Any suggestions on how to remove the core laminates?
Do you leave them in place and cut grooves into them?
                      Thanks
                      Marc

Some spark testers have a .030 or better gap. These coils often fail spark testers because the ignition systems are often designed for a .020 gap on the spark plugs. That extra .010 is asking a lot out of the coils in question especially if the magnets in the flywheel have lost a little flux (magnetic field has weakened) over time. Find the right old timer and they have the right old school stuff and they can re-magnetize the magnet cores in your flywheel. However in most cases that isn’t really needed and the bench tested or spark tested coils with plugs properly gapped fire just fine.
