      I’m currently rebuilding a Johnson QD-19.
The bottom crankshaft bearing needs  to be replaced, so while I’m at it I want to replace the top bearing as well, however I can’t get the cam to come off.

Am I missing something obvious here?

FT, if it were mine I would put some heat on that points cam.  It won’t take to much if you have  a benzamatic torch.  You might try a heat gun also.   Borrow your honeys hair dryer when she is not looking.

          Thank you for your response!

I already tried heating it with a propane torch but that didn’t help.

So apart from friction nothing is holding the cam on the tapered shaft, correct?

Shaft is not tapered in the cam area. Cam is just stuck on. Ideally it  should be snug fit but come off  with not to much effort. If you pry up on it try to do it from opposite sides in tandem at the same time. A little propane Bernz o Matic heat will help if you cannot do it cold. Only concentrate heat on cam. The cam may have a top and bottom orientation so confirm if it does if so someone could have put it on wrong before you.

alternating heating..and cooling may break the bond    (btw did you try soaking a while  with a release agent or simple WD-40)

try heat on the cam  (if using a torch stop the flames!!!  ………. then  freeze the crankshaft with a can of keyboard spray cleaner from the Dollar store… held upside down  the contents with blast out and  freeze anything !

if no result ……………. heat up the shaft and freeze the cam

lots of theory on heating or freezing  circular shapes…like a cam ….. does it expand or shink if heated… or freezed  🙂

If all else fails, there’s always the bearing separator / puller

There are lots of them around, so if you break it, so be it.  But it should slide right off.  Must be rusted on or something.

                    Thanks all for your replies.

I’ll try being a bit more persuasive with the torch.

By the way, I don’t see the “top” mark, so it seems to be upside down as Billy-j suggested.

It’s probably rusted on so a good soaking with your favorite penetrating oil should help to loosen it up.
