I just picked up a Johnson HA-10 serial number 352643. According to every list I have seen, the serial number places it in 1939. But the HA-10 was only made in 1940, also according to lists I have seen. Anyone have an answer?

I had an HD-10 with the 1939 serial #. Like yours it was at the tale end of the 1939 serial # allocation: 315167 to 355971. I always assumed they got an early jump on the 1940 models for Christmas that year. Since the Great Depression was starting to lift by then, companies were going all-out to see profits again!

That or some post-merger Evinrude employee got into the mix – Lord knows back in the 20s and 30s they didn’t seem to know the first thing about orderly model and serial numbers… 😛

I think they were allowed to drink on the job back then to.

Check out the precision hand stamping on this A-35 sheave. The ‘A’ had been stamped sideways, the ‘3’ is upside down and the ‘5’ has been double struck. It could possibly have been a new guys first day on the job to. ☺
