      Will a tiller handle from a 54/55 Johnson 25hp work on a 57 Johnson 35hp?
      Thanks

If the gears match up. They were changed from stamped brass gears to cast bronze gears in 1956. You can swap if you do both shafts so they match.

          Thanks Frank.
I’m going to look at the 25hp Johnson now.
It hasn’t run in 25yrs, hope to get it cheap.

            I got the motor.
            It’s a 1955 Johnson RDE 17, 25hp.
He said it got new coils 28 yrs ago, think they’re any good?
I’ve been watching for a tiller handle for a 57 Johnson 35hp for
a while now. I figured if anything I’d try to get this cheap enough
            and use the tiller handle.
            And I did! 😀
Now I’m gonna jump this to head of the someday rack.
It came with a tank, shift/throttle control and a steering wheel.
I asked about the electric connections but he said his dad had it hard wired.

              Looking at the posted picture
That motor seems to have a pointy tooth gear
              I never had a 57
Did the 57’s have a ball tooth gear or a pointy tooth gear?

I don’t know witch gear is on the 57 but I should be able
to take what I need from the 55.
But I kinda like this 55 so I’ll keep watching for one for the 57.

As Frank posted above, 1956 marked the change to the cast bronze gears with the rounded tooth profile. The 1957 should have the rounded teeth. I’d definitely get the 55 back up and running. That’s a nice old motor.

The stamped gear 376414 (pointy toothed) was used up to 1956 model Big Twin 25022-09000. Model 25022-09001 and up used the stronger cast brass (round toothed) gear. A great deal of handle swapping occurred as many bad Stamped assemblies were replaced with the newer assembly. Just BE SURE THE GEARS MATCH – period . . . 😉
