Hi,
I was trying to figure out the best way to grease the lower unit on my TS 20 , I know there is a screw on the impeller housing and a vent screw above on the shaft, how do you put the grease in , there is not zurk fitting. I thought I read that you pump the grease into the bottom hole until it comes out the top. Any help?
Thanks,
Steve
Welcome RJ! You don’t use modern grease gun grease in your gear case. The stuff that was originally recommended for your motor is no longer available. You need a “00” grade grease aka lubraplate, John Deer corn head grease or Picker head grease sold by Tractor Supply. Lubraplate and Tractor supply come in squeeze bottles. That is what I use in my older cases that require some sort of sticky stuff. Many older motors have no seals in them. 00 grease stays in and lubricates even if water is inside. Make sure you drain the water out before freezing weather.
The TS-20 model does have seals, and can use grease or 90W hypoid oil. For 90W the best way is to buy an inexpensive pump that has a hose that screws into the filler port. The pump screws onto the top of a quart or gallon jug of marine grade 90W taking the place of the cap. Once hooked up, just pump the oil until it runs out of the open top vent. Replace the top vent screw before disconnecting the filler at the bottom. Then disconnect the filler fitting, and quickly screw in the drain plug before much oil leaks out.
