May 19, 2016 at 12:59 pm #36762by screamer I actually meant FAST and powerful not noisy screamer as in broken…
as to oil in the gearcase….of course the BEST solution is to open it inspect and fix but it may be just leaking a bit. Replacing the oil a few times is cheap and will protect it while you figure out how to fix it yourself. Of course you can always bring it to a dealer and have him reseal and presuure test the gearcase $$$$
just my humble opinion…..my hobby is mostly evinrude low HP from the 50-60s…easier to work on than Mercs 🙂
seems mercs always need special tool$$$

May 19, 2016 at 2:08 pm #36769Ahhh. Okay.
And yeah the videos I’ve seen of the 1250 in action seem very impressive. But I don’t think I’ll have her in the water for at least a month. I also have a lot of work to do on the hull which is a whole different monsters worth research.
The special wrench for this thing is kind of a piss off, but in the meantime I’m going to take your advice fill it with gear oil and give her some test runs and observe the amount of water that’s getting in. I’ve read alot of people say a little milky isn’t the end of the world. I’m going to go ahead and order the water pump kit and change that before I test her out again.
As for johnson’s, my 15 hp evinrude on my tin can is awesome and I got it for such a steal (1200 for boat and motor). Brand new prop and the gear oil was pristine when I drained it in the fall last year. Love that little thing.
Hopefully after working on this merc I’ll have a much better understanding when approaching future maintenance for my 15 hp.

May 20, 2016 at 1:17 pm #36850More likely, the swivel was changed out. Rest of motor appears to be 1250, too. Motor is going on 50 years old. Any number of backyard hacks, shade tree mechs, and good ol’ boy engineering could have gone on.

It’s going to be fun bringin some more life into her (and the hull)
