The forward gear bushing may have been set in place too far back in the gear housing.  I’m talking  a few thousands.  Put the gear case nose down on the bench and give the prop shaft a confident wack forward with a steel hammer.  Don’t mushroom the thing, just whack it. It may move the forward bushing enough just enough to put everything within tolerance.  I just ran into this on a 1976 six.

      Long live American manufacturing!

been reading lots of old posts  on shock absorber  size…. 6″11/16  seems the magic number … mine meaures  6″ 13/16 .

while initially  working the housing  I recall it falling out  on the  ciment floor  and wonder if it got  messed up then ???   anyhow… pursuing the adventure

GC gears turn fine on their own  but driveshaft turns about 3/4 turn and binds… on its own   . I’ll reinspect the  shock absorber  and  if  6″11/16 is the magic  number I’ll have my neighbour  tack weld it  at 6″11/16.

“Spring has sprung”  …4C  and sunny  🙂 today

ok remeasured the shock and exactly 6 13/16   silly thing must have expanded when dropped on the floor   wacked it with a wooded hammer back to 6 11/16 perfectly

            will have it tacked

now if I can find that silly  half moon key way   for the drive shaft pinion gear  i’ll will be on the road to success

            thanks all !!!

            🙂  🙂  update….key  found  !!!

              update  March 09….

Shock absorber  welded to 11/16    gear case  grinding gone 🙂    drive and prop  shafts   turn ok but a bit tight with all new  shaft prop seals and new impeller  normal I guess

              G C sealed up   to be tested….
