just picked up a Mercury mark 20H at an estate sale and have some questions

Just picked up this outboard at a local estate sale and i do have some questions.

what are my options for fuel delivery? Is there a way to keep the existing fitting but use a single line adapter.

How do you remove the flywheel? The nut on top looks weird.

Is the powerhead supposed to be gold or silver? The numbers on the powerhead do match the plate on the transom assembly.

Any info would be appreciated. I do not own many mercs.

Nice find! With the Carter carb, to boot!

Powerhead is supposed to be gold. Doesn’t mean much, though. Not uncommon for a racing motor to get mis-matched parts, replacement cylinder blocks, etc. Yours has had the cowling and recoil painted, too, with some sort of silver detailing in the lettering.

The part that I question about the power head is the the numbers that are stamped into the powerhead ( the side of the engine) match the serial number on the transom assembly plate. So wouldn’t that mean that the power head is the original one?

Mercurys have a host of special tools; one of them being a special wrench to remove that flywheel nut:

I found that a pipe wrench and a cloth to protect the surface of the "nut" worked fine on my KE-7…..but I wouldn’t go so far as to recommend that you do that 🙂

I have the fuel fitting to change to single line tank and keep the pressure lin fitting on the motor.

Still not uncommon for them to be painted up. As noted, yours has seen a spray can or two in its time.

You scored BIG TIME on that one. That lower and prop are worth the price of admission.. On a racing upper the power head has most likely been apart more times then can be counted. Don’t let the non matching paint throw you. That thing is golden.
