Where can I find inexpensive replacement head bolts for a beater JW-10 3hp I’m working on?

The factory replacement ones are $8.50 each, not including washers. They measure 1-1/8" long. The closest length the hardware stores have are 1" or 1-1/4". Will a 1-1/4" fit?

Also, the factory bolt is Grade 5. Should I stick with that hardness?

I just don’t want to spend over 50 bucks for 6 bolts for a $40 motor!

Check the length of the unthreaded portion also. OMC loved to use bolts that you had to buy from them.

It seems OMC made a lot of their fasteners 1/8" shorter or longer than regular size bolts. Grade 5’s are plenty strong for your JW and if you find the 1 1/4" bolts are a bit too long and you don’t want to shorten them, 6 mil metric washers will stack nicely under the head and they are small in diameter just like the originals. 😀

            Thanks for the replies.

I finally got a chance to mess with the JW again, and removed the frozen / broken head bolts, and chased the threads.

Picked up some 1-1/4" Grade 5 bolts at the hardware store. They fit just fine.

Each bolt was less than the tax on the "Factory" bolts! 😆

Can’t even see why the need for even grade 5 bolts, but it wont hurt. my torque chart shows 60-80 in-lbs. that’s 5-6 ft-lbs. enjoy!!!

I had brought the stock part # to my local dealer, and purchased one bolt so I could match it at the hardware store. The stock bolt was a Grade 5, so that’s what I bought. On this little motor, I’m sure most any grade would do though.
