Ooh, I get to take more apart! Thanks
December 20, 2020 at 3:13 pm #225616Nobody else mentioned it yet, the third hole in the ’59 faceplate was for an adjustable high speed needle which your newer motor doesn’t have. There is a kit to add one if you wish to do so. P/N 379627, if its still available.
If you have too many, AND not enough, you're a collector.
December 20, 2020 at 6:36 pm #225620They have the kit for 22$, I suppose I could just use the one from the 59 donor motor. Is there an advantage in having it? I wonder why they discontinued it.
December 21, 2020 at 10:34 am #225687Gives you more control over the high speed running of the motor. Also easier to clean the high speed circuit. With the fixed jet, you need a special tool to remove/clean the jet. The fixed jet does have the advantage of no packing washers. If you switch to the adjustable needle, you’ll need the adjustment knob which goes on the end.
December 21, 2020 at 12:18 pm #225688Thing is, the fixed high speed jet was a selling feature. Clamp the motor on the boat and go, with a minimum of fussing. After all, you didn’t have to adjust the high speed jet on your car, did you? BUT, there were some people that just couldn’t stand not having something to fuss with. So the adjustable needle was brought back as a kit.
December 21, 2020 at 1:07 pm #225690I should have all the parts from the 59 motor, does anyone happen to know what the “c” designation is on the motor? It doesn’t show up online at all.
December 21, 2020 at 1:27 pm #225693December 21, 2020 at 2:10 pm #225699Are these settings static once you get it running right? Or is it something that needs regular fine tuning?
December 21, 2020 at 3:23 pm #225700Fixed jets are non adjustable but the needles with knobs are meant to be adjustable. That’s why they are on the front of the motor for easy access.
Some motors which are hard to start like having the needles richened up a bit to get them going and then they are fine tuned as the motor warms up. Altitude, air density, as on a hot or cold day and moisture in the air can all affect how a motor runs, requiring slight adjustments of the needles.
December 21, 2020 at 3:44 pm #225701…and if the fuel/oil ratio is off a bit, or for those of us that like a little extra oil.
If you have too many, AND not enough, you're a collector.
