Picked up a KD4S yesterday. All complete and in good shape. Checked the compression first thing. Top was 115 and bottom was 115. Never had that happen before on such an old motor. It was stored correctly. There is no spark so I’m assuming points. Not sure how to remove the flywheel fastener? Paid $450.00 for it. CDN dollars which would be less in US dollars.
April 23, 2021 at 9:20 am #236814I have a KD4. I’m not sure what the “S” on yours means.
Coils could very well be bad regardless if it has the Scintilla
or Eisemann ignition, but either can be contended with.
Have fun! That’s just a fancy flywheel nut. I’m sure they have a special
tool. You can either rig up some kind of spanner wrench,
or use a pipe wrench carefully.Prepare to be boarded!

April 23, 2021 at 9:31 am #236817I believe the S is for a rewind set up.
April 23, 2021 at 10:35 am #236821Ratchet nut has a right hand thread. Although there is a Mercury
Service Tool for removing and installing the Ratchet Nut a padded
pipe wrench will work. There is also a Mercury Service Tool for holding flywheel steady many use rope in cylinder, Torque spec for flywheen
nut is 40 FOOT pounds, Too little and keyway gets battered by loose flywheel…too tight may split hub of flywheel thru keyway slot
To have spark. the points. coils, condensers, connections, wires and
spark plug ALL have to be at work. If you find a film of oil on magneto
plate suspect the upper crankshaft seal. At the other end of things water pump impeller and seal are usually deteriorated. Gear case should
be inspected and lubed. There are some small parts involved that may
insist on getting lost of left out, Take photos as you go so you can
follow a favorite repair manual instruction…Reassemble in Reverse Order…Upper seal is 7415 water pump seal is 4923Upper seal access requires removal of magnet rotor…tricky job without
the Mercury Service Tools for removing and replacing. Rotor can be
broken by prying (this applies for Bendix Scintilla magneto system yours appeare to be Eisemann Magneto system _
A lot of do this and don’t do that…all of which I learned the hard way…the language in your work shop will be more civil if you can avoid
the learning experiences,
Good Luck

April 23, 2021 at 9:04 pm #236866Looks like you’re missing the sparkplug covers. Here you go https://www.ebay.com/itm/265127958917?hash=item3dbadb9985:g:pGUAAOSwuN5ge4n~

April 23, 2021 at 10:59 pm #236871Actually I do have them. Removed them to check compression. But I do need another pair for another project. Thanks for the heads up. Also looking for the front cowl with the badge.
