Working on the recoil. Is the allen screw that holds the sheave left handed? The recoil has a steel cable and only pulls out a little less than a foot. then stops. Any help?

Not sure if that recoil is similar to the Mark 5, but I gave
up trying to get that allen screw out. I heated and beated
and it would’t budge. I finally just ground off the minimum
of the peen on the sheave post and took every thing apart
        that way.

        Prepare to be boarded!

if it is off the motor that is how it works. the paws engage to far and lock it up0. the allen is right handed. unless you need to remove or replace the spring no need to remove the allen screw. 1 914 310 7086.

If you have a broken spring the easiest way to get the recoil apart is actually to drill the head off that Allen head screw with a 5/16 drill. The head will fall off once you get to the shank of the screw. The remainder of the bolt unscrews easily.

Use caution since the spring jumps out at you when it unwinds.

If you heat the end of the old spring with a mapp gas or propane torch you can form a new loop with needle nose pliers. Heat and then Quench the spring end when you are done so it will hold its shape again.

Yes David the recoil is off the motor, so maybe it’s ok. I’m just on the reassembly. Onward to the water pump!
              Thanks!
