I have my eye on a KG9 with chrome start pully. It is locked up, where is unknown but appears in the upper end. No controls. It is not a peach. The question is…….How much can one pay for such a creature and not get heart too bad? Out here on the plains of Nebraska there are very few other(none) of its type to compare too. If any of you are willing to stick your neck out a little it would be mighty appreciated.
Thanks, Q
Correction…..don’t you just hate it when you have to eat your own words…..This particular outboard is not a KG9, but a KF9. In addition I am including several photos that may clarify its condition and identify.

December 18, 2020 at 3:12 pm #225495If it’s complete AND has the tller handle, you can’t get hurt unless you spend north of $600. If all parts are present and serviceable, you really can’t lose money on it at this amount. This is merely my opinion.
Many motors values have dropped dramatically over the last few years. While the kg9 is no exception, it has maintained it’s value better than most.
Again, just my opinion based on no pics and assuming it’s a complete motor.
Now that I’ve stuck my neck out, let the choppin’ begin!! 😂

December 20, 2020 at 9:12 am #225600Of course there can be many opinions about the value of this particular KF9. Scott is probably about spot on as far as fair price for this motor in its current condition.
On the plus side
Its a KF9. First year Merc Inline Four
The tiller handle is complete and still attached to the motor
The fuel connector is there
Prop looks good
Exhaust tower has not been cut/modified
Probably has never seen salt water in NebraskaOn the down side
Its a KF9. First year Merc Inline Four. The KF9 had weak connecting rods and magneto overheating issues. The KG9 addressed these issues.
Its important to figure out why this motor is seized. Is it from sitting? (This motor looks like its spent considerable time outdoors.) Or is it something more sinister like a broken rod? This will greatly affect what you are able to do with this motor in the future. Obviously anything can be fixed/repaired/rebuilt. Its the cost that becomes prohibitive. Parts are available for this motor but are not cheap and are not always readily available. To rebuild this motor would be a labor of love more than an investment. However, if you have the ability and are up to the task to bring this motor back from the dead by all means go for it. There is nothing from the time period that compares to a KF or KG9. I run mine regularly. One of my favorite Mercs for sure.
Good luck! Let us know if you purchase it.
December 20, 2020 at 10:32 am #225606Thanks, you have provided a lot of good info that is greatly appreciated. I was not even sure the tiller handle was correct. It has been outside, at present time it at least has overhead cover.
I have several green top Mercs that are now running, with varying degrees of time, money and mechanical skill, but skill for this creature would have to be seen.
Thanks again, Q
December 26, 2020 at 9:49 am #226014For 250 it has a new home……….in my shop.
Thanks all for the info.December 26, 2020 at 10:10 am #226017Wow! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you! Nice buy. Keep us posted if you decide to wrench on it. I’m personally curious as to why its stuck. One thing I forgot to mention in that other post is the gear foot. It could possibly be stuck which would in turn lock up everything above it. Drop that first in your process of elimination. Good luck!
December 26, 2020 at 12:23 pm #226020see if the flywheel rocks even a small amount if it does it is possibly the foot.

December 29, 2020 at 11:52 am #226269The gear case is off and apart, however, parts inside are rough from long ago. There was a small amount of 80-90 so no recent rust. Going to require some replacement parts.
The top end has been soaking with penetrating oil from both sides and the top for a week….nothing moving yet. What is visible thru the ports does not look too bad……..but looks, as we know, can be deceiving. It will most likely sit for some time now. Shot of lube every once in awhile.December 29, 2020 at 1:14 pm #226275Well if you ever decide to part it out let me know
