What lower unit might it be?
March 1, 2016 at 9:09 pm #32748I just thought to look on marineengine, look up 1999 (225hp) part #5.
March 2, 2016 at 12:15 am #32756Kinda seems like the pitot tube nipple cover…Were you just working on the LU, or was the rest of the engine there also…
Are you sure there is no pitot tube elbow in the front of the gearcase??March 2, 2016 at 2:07 am #32764Don’t ask me how, my driveway has a good slope and you know how hard it rains in Fla. It’s been over a year since I worked on anything with a pitot in the L/U. My friends ’99’ 130hp had a V6 L/U which he killed, we got a V4 L/U for it and only had to fashion a shift shaft to make it work. I think that L/U had a pitot, I’ll definitely be looking next time I see it!! I can’t see how it could have come from the 1990’s 50hp (3 cyl) I was working on at the time.
You know how things hit the ground and disappear? I found a very small pin from something I worked on long, long ago recently and another small part too. Oh yeah, a points clip – you hear them land but can’t find them. Any more, I look for a while, then just wait for them to re-appear.March 2, 2016 at 3:39 am #32774Is the piece closed on one end, but open on the other like a pitot elbow cover?
March 2, 2016 at 12:45 pm #32782No, it’s like a plug to keep water from entering the pitot hole.
March 2, 2016 at 1:07 pm #32783What Don is asking is it solid rubber on one end? The plugs I have are not tapered.

March 2, 2016 at 3:36 pm #32785You’re right, #5 on a ’99’ 225hp doesn’t appear tapered and it’s called an elbow plug, not a pitot plug. I’ll check it again, but it appears to be all plastic. It almost seems like it had to come from the 1990’s 50hp I was working on, but from where/what the heck is it?
I just went to ME and looked up a 1997 E50DTLEUR lower unit and saw nothing like it. All I did on this L/U was an impeller and oil since it held pressure and everything else looked good.
Know what, this L/U appears to have been repainted, I wonder if someone saw those cavity drain holes and thought they needed to be plugged up.
That’s ALL I can come up with. There’s no way that thing has been laying on my driveway for a year or more. -
