I’m looking for info on a Koban inboard motor I’ve acquired. I’ve found one photo ad from the mid teens but that’s all. Anyone have one of these motors or some literature?
Thanks,

there is probably not much, I guess
found one picture of an inboard in Arlan Carter’s "the American Rowboat Motor" book.
3 hp made from 1916 – early 1920 ‘s
if the serial nr. is also on the circular plate at the top of the crankcase, you can figure out
from what year your motor is.

atop of the gear box?Prepare to be boarded!
June 12, 2017 at 1:38 pm #59526That is a motor/generator. Unit could be run by battery by dis-engaging the clutch. I suppose Koban motor could be started by using the electric motor also. Koban power head could also charge the batteries used for running the electric motor while also powering the boat. I have seen advertisement photos of the regular "Koban Inboard" but nothing on this unit. It might be a one of a kind or maybe a few were made for an amusement park or ??

hmm, does that carburetor work in that position ?
is it not a home made "one of a kind" built
of an original outboard powerhead ?
I am curious, which well informed person has the solution here ?

It even has a throttle between mixer and crankcase which doesn’t show well in photo. Don’t believe it’s home made as there are several nice castings, one of which is part of the lower crankcase housing. Water pump is some kinda of centrifugal pump mounted on unseen side of the aluminum casting. Upper crankcase flange has no serial stamped into it or even a "flat" to stamp it on.
June 13, 2017 at 1:15 pm #59596I found this on internet. Has some good pics and shows the gauges , controls, prop etc. That is a neat engine for sure. I’m guessing you would have reverse by reversing polarity which would be good for docking.
