Good morning
I am restoring a 1936 OMC4156
there is a lot of aluminium on this engine but the powerhead is painted steel
Should I be concerned about lead in the paint that I will be removing in the future?
Thanks

February 19, 2022 at 1:03 pm #254948yes…there are test strips to test for lead in paint…
seems there is a lot of hype on lead … old homes probably all have lead paint under 4-5 coats, home city water pipes are often lead as well as copper solder joints
smoking ,bacon, chicken wings will kill you to !

February 19, 2022 at 2:32 pm #254951I made 75 yrs without a problem with lead paint and I saw a lot in my day. you can die from many things. so why worry at this point. too much politics involved.
February 19, 2022 at 5:19 pm #254960I used to bite lead .22 bullets apart and I’m OK, I think, maybe, possibly. Not sure, can’t concentrate on that.
Also done worse, like climbing an operating radar tower once and being bombarded with RF. That was forty+ years ago and no signs of cancer or disrupted DNA yet. Knock on wood.
As with most toxic things around us, if you don’t disturb them, everything will be fine. Asbestos in old linoleum, plaster/drywall, or Arborite (P Lam) are dormant until they are cut or disturbed which releases the fibres into the air. Sometimes best to let that old sleeping dog just lie there without waking him up.
February 19, 2022 at 6:01 pm #254965A friend once listed the 4 Fast Food Groups…Salt, Sugar, Starch and Cholesterol. With older homes, machines and environments Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Asbestos and other ingredients to be named later. If you are working on an old
mechanism, assume the worst and prepare with clean safe
work practices. You do not want inhale or ingest dust or
allow dust to contaminate work area. How much risk are you willing to accept and how to deal with the risks you accept are your choices.

February 19, 2022 at 8:30 pm #254994Gentlemen,
Thank you for your colorful, thoughtful and wise words. You all have inspired me to exercise common sense when I get to that point.
On another note, are there any AOMCI meetings being scheduled for Northern Illinois or S Wisconsin in the near future?
Thanks

There is a chapter in northern IL. However
their president has moved out of state. I see
their website isn’t up to date.
