My son came over today and helped me lay down the Gale so I could install the tilt pin
that I forgot to put in previously. The tilt pin assembly and it’s spring were almost a “no-brainer”
but I’m not sure where the left over coil spring goes for sure. (Part #124 in the Gale diagram)
The lower unit was “blue” when I got it, and it’s the same as my 1955 RDE-17. Therefore
I presume it’s a 50’s lower unit from an Evinrude.
I looked on my RDE, and it doesn’t have said spring, nor does it show it in the RDE parts
diagram.
The only thing I can think of is an “anti-rattle” spring for the reverse lock lever.
The reverse lock lever works fine “as is” though. Does the main transom mount
bolt go thru the spring?
Can anyone explain where this spring goes, how it attaches, and it’s purpose?
Photo of one install would be great of course!
Thanks.Prepare to be boarded!

November 3, 2019 at 5:06 pm #186395Thanks again Frank. Tomorrow I’ll experiment with it
and see if I can figure out it’s placement.Prepare to be boarded!
November 3, 2019 at 5:42 pm #186396Harder pull than the Johnson and Evinrude 40s. They had the compression release, and for some reason, Gale left that off……but…..I’ve pulled over 40s with and without the release and it isn’t as much difference as you’d expect.
DaveNovember 3, 2019 at 8:32 pm #186414J/E also discontinued the compression relief after 1962-ish or so. Hey, everybody removed them anyway. It will actually start better without it (assuming you are strong enough to pull the rope).
November 3, 2019 at 8:41 pm #186419I have a properly functioning compression relief on my 1959 Evinrude Big Twin. I would bet if you’re not strong enough to pull the rope without the compression relief, youre you’re not strong enough to pull the rope fast enough to start it with the reduced compression. You really have to spin the thing over to get it to start with the compression relief functioning.

One guy said it is “shifting cable or throttle cable bushing”

November 4, 2019 at 7:25 pm #186485Outboardnut, thanks for the idea on the brass piece. It could have been laying
loose inside of the bottom cowling when I disassembled everything, or perhaps
used as a spacer on the lower cowl pan. The rubber spacers / mounts there were missing
when I took it apart. I made some Delrin spacers…. better than nothing.Prepare to be boarded!

Flip it over. If it’s curved it’s a carbide cutter insert for machining metal -
