leaky head gasket
December 23, 2016 at 12:14 pm #49618Definitely worth pulling the exhaust cover and head, just to make sure everything is OK and the rings aren’t rusted in place. How’s the fuel tank? Looks like a great project that will run great.
December 23, 2016 at 4:08 pm #49629I pulled the exhaust cover last night and didn’t see anything I though was bad. Lots of carbon on the piston tops but the sides of the piston and the cylinders looked pretty good. But, those are little bitty ports to try to see through. I pressed on the rings and they moved and sprung back so I don’t think they are stuck or broken.
I am gonna pull the head after cleaning things up and get a good look. The fuel tank looks good inside. Kinda crusty and stinky but no rust.
December 23, 2016 at 4:42 pm #49631What would be good to get the grease off of this thing without taking the paint off? The stuff I usually use is way too strong. It took a good deal of the paint off the powerhead when I tried to get the grease off. Not a big deal on this motor but I need something else to use on the parts that show.
December 23, 2016 at 5:02 pm #49632I use regular Dawn with warm water for those parts.
December 23, 2016 at 5:02 pm #49633December 23, 2016 at 5:28 pm #49636i have used LA Awesome spray cleaner from the Dollar Tree store, works darn good. Scrub the tough build up with your wife’s toothbrush for best results .I rinse with water afterwords. Would recommend a new toothbrush in her Xmas stocking for even better results. 😀

Robbie RobertsonDecember 23, 2016 at 6:33 pm #49643Well, I will defer to the experts here but why would someone spend so much time trying to make a Johnson look like an Evinrude?
I cleaned off the ID plate enough to read the numbers last night and even asked Dan in TN about some gaskets but it never dawned on me that it read JW-13. I guess when I was cleaning the round ID medallion a little while ago and saw a SEA HORSE on it my brain fart dimmed. The red paint should have been a tip-off. Go figure.

(Johnson power head / rest mostly Evinrude)A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
