Well, I will defer to the experts here but why would someone spend so
much time trying to make a Johnson look like an Evinrude?

Most likely you have the best parts from 2 motors.
(Johnson power head / rest mostly Evinrude)

      Tubs,
I think the only things on the motor that are Evinrude are the tank, recoil starter, and side covers. The rest of it has Holiday Bronze paint underneath.

I saw one sweet running outboard that had the parts of 5 junk motors in it. I was greatly disappointed when he painted it all one color. I thought it was a tribute to the interchangeability of OMC models. It looked like a brand new 1957 Evinrude Fleetwin when sold and he got top dollar for it. The fisherman who bought it has gotten 6 years of hard use with no problems. Says he has been offered more than he paid for it by people having problems with newer motors. That’s why we call them classics. If properly cared for the last over 50 years. . . 😆

I was going by what I saw in the pictures.
          I’m betting your correct.
Whether red or blue or a combination of both they
are great motors. I have a couple (blue ones) and
whenever I’m taking a motor out for the first time,
until I’m convinced I haven’t missed something and
feel the motor is reliable, I have one of them with
          me.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.
