I started up a 72T for the first time this afternoon.I had water coming out the discharge lines but after no more than a minute or two the cylinders were uncomfortably hot.Is this normal for this model? The opposed Johnsons I have seem to run much cooler.

The cylinders on Lockwood models ‘T’, Ace, and Chief are not water cooled on the ends of them. Try sprinkling a few drops of water on the cylinders front & top sides with your fingers. If the water drops do not boil off, cooling is OK. The Ace & Chief water systems must be completely intact and airtight since they depend partially on suction to work at idle after the air is removed from their systems.
If the T model doesn’t pump, the 2 pump check valves probably need cleaning.
Do not touch the ends of the cylinders – you will get burned.

The 72T has a piston pump so it should work in a barrel. I second what Hotrod said.
