July 1, 2018 at 3:50 pm #10431July 1, 2018 at 4:51 pm #78826When i was converting my Johnson 25 short to long shaft, I had some questions . If i remember correctly,Garry said he used to have a tool that he used to expand copper tubing to make one. Some kind of plumbing tool.
I’m sure you know the brass shift shaft extension is OMC. That came in handy in my conversion."Some people want to know how a watch works, others just want to know what time it is"
Robbie RobertsonJuly 1, 2018 at 6:03 pm #78827That’s made by a copper tube flaring tool, used by air conditioning guys. Insert one tube inside another, then silver solder. It looks like that one is actually a little short. It’s the same overall as the 5" shift shaft extender. Once you insert it over the original tube 1/2 to 3/4", the totall length looks to be less than 5" effectively. July 1, 2018 at 7:10 pm #78831I have seen them before. They were part of OEM extension kits. Long live American manufacturing! July 1, 2018 at 9:52 pm #78844Makes more sense to simply pull the water tube out and put a long one in it’s place. Steve A W July 2, 2018 at 12:37 am #78854Yes, that long brass shift rod connector is what came in the extension kits from OMC…Much better option than having to replace either the upper or lower shift rod. The water tube extension looks home made although OMC made water tube extensions that were more or less the same thing. I think there was a groove in the larger diameter flare of the tube for an oring though. Again, this is a whole lot simpler option than replacing the upper water tube on some models.
So, I am thinking this engine was a short/standard/15" model when it was new, and someone extended it afterwards…
