For a while now, I’ve been trying to find out what the decal might look like on a 1931 Evinrude Model 183. The motor was Evinrude’s way of using up old stock of Model N Sportwin parts. If anyone has any ad or brochure which shows the motor, please let me know. All help is appreciated.
Apparently the 4 hp motor that came out in 1931 was the featured small hp motor for a few years, so I’m not even sure the 183 was ever advertised.
Hi Tom, I have a double-page Evinrude/Elto ad dated 1931 that shows the Elto line-up on the left page and the Evinrude motors on the right.
The Sportwin model is not pictured. Motors are referred to by their model names; no model numbers are given. I think I am correct in saying the model 183 (Sportwin) from 1931 is 2.2 HP, and the model 409 (Sportwin) from 1932 is 4 HP. Sorry I have no better info for you; my oldest Evinrude sales literature is from 1932. Let me know if you’d like to see the 1931 ad. I can email it to you, just can’t figure out how to attach it here. John Hagerman, Western Reserve Chapter
Thanks for looking. The Sportwin is a 2.5 hp opposed twin. My email is manleyt at verizon dot net. (posted cryptically to avoid bot spam). Please send a photo or scan of the ad when you get a chance. The effort is greatly appreciated.
