Hey gang,
I’m just in the process of tuning up an old 1250 before I put her back on the water and give it a test.
Would anyone be able to point in the right direction toward finding a water pump for a 1968 Merc 1250?
I’ve looked online, but I can’t seem to find a water pump I know fits %100. I already got the old one out and I’m looking to get a waterpump kit with all new seals and what not.
Now this one here
http://store.oldmercs.com/product_p/46-96148a8.htmSays it will work on all 6cyl engines 1963 to 1993, however – looking at the pump it doesn’t look %100 percent like the one I have.
Here is a picture of the waterpump housing I took off.
Any ideas?
I don’t want to end up ordering the wrong one.
THANKS!

Thanks for the reply!
I was actually looking for the whole kit as I want to replace all the seals and gaskets. But on the same site you provided, I see this one.

That’s the OEM one, but they have an after market kit for half the price.

Should I be cautious of the after market one? Seems a little too good of a price.
July 17, 2016 at 7:59 pm #40396I’m sure others will chime in here, put personally I use OEM parts wherever possible. I have used the Sierra parts when OEM parts are not available, and they’ve served me well. Yet again, where neither was an option, some of our members make parts, and in those instances the parts have worked well also.
July 17, 2016 at 8:53 pm #40400Mercury’s version (OEM) of the 89984 impeller has a fiber-wound hub, which is virtually indestructible. I am pretty sure Sierra’s still has the brass hub, which may last a couple of years if you’re lucky but may fail at any time. The brass comes unfastened from the rubber and the impeller stays still. It can happen in a second and your power head is suddenly toast. I would stick with the OEM; as I have never seen one of them let go, yet….
Long live American manufacturing!
July 17, 2016 at 10:14 pm #40407You got that right! Stick with the Quicksilver [OEM] fiber hub. Stay away from the brass hub impellers.
July 18, 2016 at 12:06 am #4041496148A8 is the Mercury part# for the pump kit with the fiber hub impeller, around $49.00 at Merc. Dealer. Bill
