I’ve got a really old Johnson outboard here that I know almost nothing about… this motor has been sitting in the back corner of my mom’s garage for several decades, we just moved her out of the house and there it was, completely forgotten about.  I know it was my grandfather’s and it was used on Lake Washington in Seattle but that’s about all I know.  I don’t think it’s been run since probably the early 60’s.  Just looking to find out what I have here – is it rare, is it worth restoring, etc.  I’m very curious to find out more and help would be appreciated.

      Thanks!

I would guess it’s not rare, but it looks in relatively decent shape, and worth fixing up for sure.
The remote steering bar, if an original accessory, would probably be a more rare than the outboard.
Perhaps someone will know more about it.

        Looks like a fun project!

Nice looking K80. Somebody removed the tiller arm when they installed the remote steering bar but that shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Nice motor…  is it free to rotate? not frozen -up!  The steering bar set-up would indicate that grandpa had a fancy forward helm ( steering) on his boat… maybe a cool looking old school runabout. Any old photos in the family album?

A family heirloom, get her running, seek help from a local AOMCI chapter… two chapters in WA

Nice motor that appears to be in really good shape, assuming it’s not frozen up from sitting so long.  Not often you’ll find one in that good shape and with the remote steering bar to boot.   If it wasn’t so far away I’d want to come get it!

Points are set to 0.20″, plugs set at 0.30″. It takes one pint of 40wt oil to a gallon of  gas. I would use the newer TC-W3 at the same ratio. These motors need that much oil to run properly. Nice find, I don’t know if i have any spare tiller handles for that. The spark plug is a D9J or a 5MJ. May only need points cleaned and reset and maybe a carb cleaning.

It has also seems to have been adapted to remote throttle.
